Letter from Sumner County Museum to Jerry Howe 24 September 2000 Jerry Howe Indianapolis, Indiana 46280 "Mr. Howe: "On behalf of the Sumner County Museum, we would like to thank you for the honor of allowing us to display your wonderful model of LST-1148 USS SUMNER COUNTY. This beautiful detailed model is a great enhancement to our display. "Your pride and love of your former ship is reflected in the time, effort, and work that you have invested in her construction. Through your endeavor you have provided a reference point for the times when you and the other former crewmembers to revive lost memories and tall tales when you have your reunion. Your effort and work is something that ou and your family should be proud of. "We are honored and proud to display your model of LST-1148 SUMNER COUNTY." For the Sumner County Museum, 25 September 2000 LST-1148 USS SUMNER COUNTY ORGANIZATION C/O Terry Leahy 2659 Chatsworth Drive Beloit, Wisconsin 53511 "Mr, Leahy: "On the 16th of September, a large detailed model enhanced the USS Sumner County display. The model was built by a former crewmember, Jerry How, who served on her as a Shipfitter during the Vietnam War. "Like many sailors, Jerry wanted to build a scale model of the vessel that he had called home for months at a time. This urge began to become reality while he was reading and issue of Scuttlebutt. He found a source to obtain a 1/96th scale kit of the basic hull and deck, BaD Ship Models of Westford, New York. "Once he had the basic ship structures to work with, he began the arduous task of planning and modifying the hull to her configuration as remembered from his tour during the period of 1965 and 1966. Like many of her sister ships, she had several modifications during her service life. One of the major additions was the addition of two additional LCVP's, as the USS Sumner County had four of them. "Through Jerry's model, many of the items on display and personal photos that we have, we gained a new perspective. When the crew reunions are held here in Sumner County, the crewmembers can point to where their assigned station was when they served on her to wives, family, and other crewmembers. The model display is 15 inches wide, 17 inches tall, and 52 inches long being mounted on a base and covered by a Plexiglas cover. "On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Sumner County Museum, along with museum director, Donnal Smith and tammy DeMeio, it was my pleasure to accept this wonderful display from Jerry Howe. As a model builder, I can appreciate the effort and time spent in the construction of this ship that shares a thread of history with the people of Sumner County. I can also sense the pride and love of this sailor for the ship that provided many wonderful memories for him. "We are honored and proud to display Jerry's model of LST-1148 USS SUMNER COUNTY."
